HIAB (TRUCK LOADER CRANE) OPERATIONS
NZQA Unit Standard 16617
This course has been specifically designed for individuals who are seeking to develop the necessary skills for operating a HIAB (Truck Loader Crane) and slinging loads safely. It provides a detailed understanding of the responsibilities associated with HIAB operations, including load handling, risk management, and communication methods within the crane industry.
Unit Standard 16617 is focused on equipping participants with the competencies needed to safely and efficiently operate a HIAB, covering aspects of load slinging, crane control, and directing crane movements. The course builds upon the foundational knowledge from Unit Standard 30072 (Slinging Regular Loads Safely) and ensures that participants are proficient in handling truck loader cranes in a variety of lifting operations.
In accordance with the requirements to maintain Consent to Assess for the unit standards taught on this course, the training has been pre-moderated and approved by our standard setting body, Te Pūkenga | New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology.
PREREQUISITE:
30072 - Demonstrate and apply knowledge of slinging regular loads safely
Experience Required

Students must have a minimum of 3 months of relevant work experience in the crane or construction industry before attending this course.

Verified experience should include at least 40 documented crane operations (slinging and directing placement of load) involving truck loader cranes (HIABs). This must cover a variety of lifting operations, crane types, and communication methods.

Relevant NZTA licencing requirements.

These verified experiences can be submitted either at the time of booking, before the training, or after completion of the course.

Please note: Unit Standard 16617 will only be awarded once the required documentation has been submitted and verified.
Entry Criteria

All students must have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA Level 1 (Year 11) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher to attend this course.

If a student does not meet the English language requirement, they must provide a reader/writer. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the course.

The person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance must agree to these terms and conditions before the student can be accepted onto the course.
Key Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate safe operation of a HIAB (Truck Loader Crane), including safe lifting and load placement techniques.

Apply knowledge of risk management and hazard control during truck loader crane operations.

Use appropriate crane communication methods, including radio communication and hand signals, to ensure safe operations.

CERTIFICATION:
Upon successful completion of the course and verification of required work experience, students will be awarded Unit Standard 16617, confirming their competency in HIAB (Truck Loader Crane) operations and load slinging.
